The software that my CD-Writer mine included Adaptec DirectCD from Adaptec (now through Roxio), which allows you to write to the disk drive just like to any other disk. The installation was optional, but the DirectCD is the only part that I use.
A word of warning though, if you have updated to Windows 2000 or higher, you must not use the drivers supplied with older CD-Writers as they will destroy your system, slow it to a crawl (putting it mildly), and can't be removed.
Mine is an HP CD-Writer 7200e (External) purchase
in 1997 or 1998. Those drivers worked on my Windows
NT 4.0 and on Windows 98 SE, but messed up my
attempt to build a Windows 2000 system.

I have to regenerate my Windows 2000 system and get the proper drivers for it.
