My Notes on IrfanView http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/irfanview.txt ----------------------------------------------------------- Best picture viewer that I know of is IrfanView, it is free, and allows you to resize pictures as for email, do a slide show, full screen viewing, and handles practically any picture format. IrfanView -- Usage Notes -- version s/b 4.28 or higher if available website is: http://www.irfanview.com author is: Irfan Skiljan install IrfanView and the plugins Also at least for myself, install the Canon plugins (.CRW) for raw files, which you can find at IrfanView in plugins a lot quicker than at Canon. (don't know how to tell if you have or need it) If you failed to download both Irfanview and all of the plugins, you can still go to the site, look on left for download all plugins. IrfanView Help -- Content is arranged by the toolbar menu order, which is logical. To learn a package the best place to start besides help is to know each menu item. Start in the first topic in HELP Contents, and keep using the Next {>>] button. Toggle Full Image and Normal Window (with menus) with ENTER. The full image view will reduce size of image to fit screen. Highly recommend changing the wheel mouse button to ENTER for all software. Rotate Picture - Temporary L = Left R = Right Forward / Backward navigatation by Name Spacebar, Right Mouse, Right Arrow, Up Arrow Backspace, Left Mouse, Left Arrow, Down Arrow Home -- Top of directory (first picture) End -- Bottom of directory (last picture) + -- Zoom In (customize to right side mouse button) - -- Zoom Out (customize to left side mouse button) Hide Cursor during slide show or Full Screen (Enter) View -> Properties (P) Zoom In/Out: In with +, Out with - Original Size: Ctrl+M Permanent Rotation via Required Plug-in Shift+J (Options, Lossless Rotations with plug-in) More information about a picture I - Information, see more details with Exif button P - Properties Thumbnail views T - Thumbnails Options -> Properties/Settings (P) JPG / PCD / GIF [x] Auto-rotate image according to EXIF info (if available) Full screen / Slideshow [x] Fit to screen: large images only (recommended)_ See additional options on menu bar website is: http://www.irfanview.com ------ If you did not install IrfanView to automatically open .JPG files, and I can't see why you would not, then you can still get quickly to IrfanView by right-clicking on the filename in Explorer and choosing IrfanView to open the file. ------ Viewing Exif Information retained on digitial pictures on internet From Firefox, install Launchy Extension for access to Irfanview - see http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm From Internet Explorer, right-click on picture, send file, right-click on image name above subject line, open with Irfanview Once in Irfanview, type in I for info., then click on Exif button. ------ Full Screen mode: text courier 15 (default is courier 10)J $D$F $X$T (display file date and time) $D$F $X (default in 4.00 and probabably prior_ $N $E306 $C $I25 f$E33437 $E33434 $E28 choosen later $X $F $E306 $C $I25 f$E33437 $E33434 $E28 -- ISO $E34855, Dist $E37382, F.L. $E37386 [3/5] IMG_0532.JPG 2009:02:08 13:09:49 f11 1/250 seconds Not Fired -- ISO 1600, Dist , F.L. 75mm $D - file directory/folder (whole path) $F - file name (with extension) $X - file directory index $T - file date/time (see Apx A) $N - file name w/o extension $E306 - file date/time (see Apx A) $C - JPG file comment, if available $I25 - keywords f#E3437 - fNumber $E33434 - Exposure Time $E28 - Flash Activity ------ remaining has to do with me creati[ng smaller image sizes for email --- Crop: use the menu edit->create custom selection SHIFT+C to create a custome selection and set the ation 12" x 18" Hold Ctrl+drag to resize according to ratio set Hold Ctrl+right to move the selection frame around on picture Ctrl+Y to crop retaining the selection Resize Sample Image 1022 x 767, DPI: 72 pixels, preserve aspect Ratio [x] Resample (better quality) Lanczos filter (slowest) -- don't know differences on filters Creating smaller copies 47% from 2160 x 1440 pixels, 45% from camera setting Large/Fine} Also note that IrfanView has Batch Processing Options (invoke from a picture or menu) B - Batch (L=2272x1704, M1=1600x1200, m2=1024x768, s=640x480, raw=ccdraw) jpeg options Save quality 25% on scale [for emailing] save as progressive jpg keep exif (but not comments, which are empty) advanced - resize 45% maintain aspect brings to 1024 x 768 approx. use resample (better quality) don't enlarger smaller images save file with original date and time -------- Settings for all pictures whether CRW (RAW) or Super Fine, or Fine Save quality 47%, 72 DPI, progressive jpg, 1024 x 768 pixels. Scanning non critical color brouchures via Irfanview Scanner is set up with Paper Port which creates undesired proprietary .MAX files Irfanview allows bypassing preview and creating .jpg directly File: Acquire (Ctrl+A); File: Batch scanning (for each file to be scanned): output name (prefix): ScanImage, start index: 1, Incre 1, digits 3, [x] skip exiting files (names), Dest: (fill-in), save as: JPG, [](if tiff used) Use Scan button and settings on scanner software, set to color: custom: 100 DPI (Scan size: choose trim on or off, will stick) Save, (JPG, 100%) Shift+J (Options, JPG Lossless) for 90 rotations, flips, optimize) Ctrl+E (Image, Effects, Effects Editor) for fine rotations and effects If the object is not perfectly flat, or has gold or silver for relections, you might do better with a camera than with a scanner at least to see relief. Slide Show: (key W) allows you to create a slide as list, or with the files as an .exe on a CD. Problems with CRW (Canon RAW) files (as experienced Jan 2005) Must use Canon FileViewer utility to convert. Canon plug-ins not working with IrfanView for me just yet. The Canon utility changes the dates in the directory so it is extremely user unfriendly.
