Just to keep you up to date we got rid of our old 3800 model 3 laser printer and replaced it with a new 3900 laser printer. Among the noticeable improvements are darker print, and printing that is consistent relative to in/out folds. In other words you should not have to refold your output to make it look presentable. The 3900 is an AFP (Advanced Function Printer) with a print density of 240 x 240 pels (picture elements, or dots) per square inch. It is a non-impact, all-points addressable, continuous-forms printer that prints up to 229 pages per minute (for 8 1/2 inch forms). The speed is very consistent even for complicated material. The rated speed of smaller lasers attached to PCs (8-30 page sides/minute) on the other hand is tremendously affected by changes in fonts and complicated graphics. In the past considerable use of preprinted forms was a necessity in order to produce output quickly with unchanged portions in a variety of type sizes. With laser printers today as long as you require only black ink, the entire form and unique portions can be printed at the same time. On mainframes our traditional output is 132 characters wide printed in a LANDSCAPEœŸ format. In order to print in PORTRAITœ a form definition is required in your JCL. On the 3900 portrait and landscape pertain to how output is viewed and have no relevance to the physical direction of the paper through the printer. All output not in landscape will require a form definition in JCL. Print features can be specified on the OUTPUT statement in JCL and include FORMDEF, PAGEDEF, CLASS, FORMS, GROUPID, and DEST. In clists and TSO usage these items may be included on an OUTDES command. n ART002 on
