Missing Webpages, Missing sites on Referenced pages

Sometimes pages disappear permanently or temporarily. This page might help you find the missing page or provide a link to a new temporary location. Sites can be down temporarily due to electrical rewiring of a campus, weather, ISP lost the files, ISP suffered damage, the site was moved, the site owner messed up their own files, or is no longer capable of maintaining a site (old age, other interests).

Use Wayback Machine (arhive.org) to see old version(s) (#wayback)

The Wayback Machinge at archive.org has archived copies (historical copies at intervals) of many web pages. It will not archive .asp or .aspx because they have no specific content, nor will it archive files that are indicated as NOINDEX or as NOARCHIVE in the Meta Tags, or where the robot.txt file at the domain level says not to index.
There are bookmarklets that can help you with the Wayback Machine, and there are Firefox Extensions that can help as well.
You can prefix the missing url (i.e. example.com)with one of the following:

http://www.archive.org/web/*/http://example.com — for links to archived copies
http://www.archive.org/web/*dc_/http://example.com — for links and comparisons of archived copies.
If you land on a page that is no longer valid you may find the old content to help you find the new page by using a bookmarklet. For my bookmarklets and collected bookmarklets see my Firefox page on -- keyword shortcuts (../firefox/kws.htm). The following bookmarklet from can be used once you have landed on a page missing page as long as the url on the address bar has not been modified.

Geocities archived (#geocities)

Geocities websites went black -- GeoCities closed on October 26, 2009.in 2008, for more information on find old Geocities sites, see my main index page as this affects far more than Excel. There are several archives and it will take years for them to be restored and indexed as archived websites. Once you can read an archived site, you can search on that information to try to find the current site, if there is one.

LockerGnome (#lockergnome)

Should look into a Regular Expression pattern to convert using something like ReplaceEm, freeware, Bill Keane, designed to operate on multiple files at once. And you need not only perform one search-replace operation per file -- you can setup a list of operations to perform. Supports Regular Expressions. 572KB download

Microsoft Newsgroups (#xlnews)

Microsoft closed its newsgroups and all past newsgroups postings disappeared, October 8, 2010, almost as soon as they announced they were getting rid of them in the next two weeks. Whether the archives at google groups will show them or not, I don't know, I will leave the links in place though. Looks like the newsgroups will continue as if they had always been run by Google, but don't know about the old material. Current status: Excel has been virtually destroyed by Office Ribbon, loss of menus, and tying macros into menu. The MVP program has been decimated, Microsoft newsgroups destroyed.
